Lip gloss and salves are wonderful! We use them to enjoy soft, healthy lips and hands. Skin and lips can chap or dry from wind, cold, or heat. Even normal skin can have rough areas or calluses. We love the feel of salve on our tired bodies and enjoy the relaxing sensation of applying it. That's what makes them marvelous gifts for friends, family, and lovers. Unfortunately many store bought products contain chemicals, artificial fragrances, and alcohol that can actually cause dryness. Those products don't make great gifts!</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #404040; font-family: Aller, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="border: 0px; color: #404040; font-family: Aller, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;">
When you make your own with <a href="http://www.myromancestory.com/eBooks/library_story_view.php?storyID=230&format=previews" target="_blank">my recipe</a> from the book <em style="background-color: #f5e7eb; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 14px;"><a href="http://www.myromancestory.com/eBooks/library_story_view.php?storyID=230&format=previews" target="_blank">Family Honey: Five Generations of Beekeeping </a></em>you'll know the ingredients are healthy and healing. For the holidays use organic red, green, or purple food coloring and get creative with scents too.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #404040; font-family: Aller, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Look for decorative containers at your local thrift store. Many craft and supply stores carry lip gloss holders and hand lotion bottles. If you're in the Seattle area, Archie McPhee has a nice selection of interesting bottles in the back of the store. </div>

<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
To glean information on better beekeeping management and techniques, do you tend to sidestep formal conference presentations in favor of informal meetings at a local coffee shop? That’s what national surveys indicate. Not to worry. We now have the country’s largest beekeeping coffee shop that can bring the experiences of thousands of beekeepers to you. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
And it’s free. You don’t have to buy the coffee or wait for a refill or tip the waiters. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
It’s the online <b>“Bee Informed Partnership"</b>. You can go to <span style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline;"><span style="color: #1155cc;"><a href="http://beeinformed.org/">http://beeinformed.org/</a></span></span> and see up-to-date summaries of all the data that the nation’s beekeepers—more than 5000 so far—have submitted to the site. Thus, you can access information on what worked and what didn’t from thousands of beekeepers in the national coffee shop, not just your handful of friends in the local coffee shop. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
The <b>Bee Informed Partnership</b> is well into its third year. There is just about enough data to begin to break down the survey responses into specific sub-segments such as: regions of the country, size of operation, participants in crop pollination, etc. However, in order to make the findings valuable for commercial operators, more commercial beekeepers need to submit data. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
Participation in the program is free and totally anonymous (covered by federal and state laws). When you decide to participate, you will be presented with two electronic survey forms to complete. One is on “winter” losses (but this covers the entire year) and the other is on management practices and how effective you found them to be. The expectation is that the surveys will be submitted quarterly. The good news is that each new survey form arrives pre-loaded with your last data. You change only what is different from the last time and submit it. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
The new survey season begins March 29 and remains open until April 15. By then, participants will know a lot about their wintering success or lack thereof. I strongly suggest that you take the time to become involved in this program. Besides data summaries, there are graphics of the data (which I prefer to tables any day). Additionally, some of us are allowed to comment when we think that the results could be a bit misleading, based on small sample sizes or specific biases in the respondent group. </div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
The national coffee shop is open. Your fellow beekeepers await your presence and your experiences and views. Please “bee” there at <span style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://beeinformed.org/" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">http://beeinformed.org/</a></span> .</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 5px;">
<br /></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Great news! I will have my first ever book signing at the University Book Store on <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red; font-size: small;">September 6th at 6:30</span>. Along with a few other authors I will have the opportunity to read an excerpt from my book and help raise awareness of Colony Collapse Disorder. </span></div>

<div style="font: 16.0px Times; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">This past July was the second time the EPA refused to act to help save honeybees. The controversial pesticide clothianidin (which is a neonicotinoid) has been linked to the global bee population decline. Reporting on two recent studies </span><span style="font: 16.0px 'Courier New'; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Science</span><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"> mentions that it appears to hurt the bees sense of direction. When they can't find their way home the hive is starved of foragers and pollen resulting in fewer queens and eventually collapse.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYVYr1UpM9woVvMkTFvziKN1W69VDDZMEdzEhvbrzT2i5AEetLBrDgnqCHOAJDLpPz3JdsRURUuyVBe2rNvGGL7qhDx_iymOAl26eJ3Kj3mfg_quAB_NYFZnR0ptiW1lIruW7D-QCVkH9X/s1600/March-29-2012-Wired-Science-A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYVYr1UpM9woVvMkTFvziKN1W69VDDZMEdzEhvbrzT2i5AEetLBrDgnqCHOAJDLpPz3JdsRURUuyVBe2rNvGGL7qhDx_iymOAl26eJ3Kj3mfg_quAB_NYFZnR0ptiW1lIruW7D-QCVkH9X/s320/March-29-2012-Wired-Science-A.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<div style="font: 16.0px Times; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">In the mid 1990's Clothianidin was introduced as a safe alternative to other detrimental pesticides. Almost 9 years later there were reports of sharp and unexplainable declines, varying from 30 − 90%. Now almost 100 million crop acres and an unknown amount of home and urban gardens are using the chemical. Clothianidin is not the only thing causing Colony Collapse Disorder but along with the above recent studies have shown that bees exposed to the chemical are more vulnerable to a common bee parasite and that it dramatically increases the toxicity of fungicides. </span></div>
<div style="font: 16.0px Times; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"> Banning it may not be the only solution or feasible with the EPA being heavily influenced by chemical companies. However why pretreat a pest threat you don’t know exists yet and when there are alternative pest management practices. </span></div>
<div style="font: 16.0px Times; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">If we don't act now the EPA won't review this again until 2018. Make your voice known to the EPA and protect bees and our food system! <a href="http://act.credoaction.com/campaign/epa_bees_stalling/?r=6939193&id=44947-5493349-qbnn93x" target="_blank">Submit your public comment today.</a> </span></div>

Whole Foods mentions on their blog "Whole Story" that over 100 crops from almonds to zucchini's rely on the honey bee to pollinate for them. The blog continues to state "<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">To sum it up, bees and other pollinators are responsible for one out of every three mouthfuls of food we eat — yet US honey bee colonies are declining at an alarming annual rate of 30% or more." </span> It's staggering to think about it like that!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnarPIqJk-wKD5vmlv5mTAtPcx7jlQVJSy75evbkRp6INYBa4X1gzk5DcSIQ8GFJn2c08mXGj_42EqbndeISvwdChczH9kCnPM6Q1g-VenjuX-_uaw9UIGvuMiwvaJu8snjgyIx5Dw0N2i/s1600/13+pg+49+close+up+bee.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnarPIqJk-wKD5vmlv5mTAtPcx7jlQVJSy75evbkRp6INYBa4X1gzk5DcSIQ8GFJn2c08mXGj_42EqbndeISvwdChczH9kCnPM6Q1g-VenjuX-_uaw9UIGvuMiwvaJu8snjgyIx5Dw0N2i/s200/13+pg+49+close+up+bee.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Haagan-Dazs created a fantastic website called <a href="http://www.helpthehoneybees.com/" target="_blank">Helping the Honey Bees.</a> It's incredibly informative and fun. Can you imagine how many delicious flavors of ice cream we would lose if we didn't have the honey bee? Check out the website to see an entire page listing of all the flavors we would lose.<br />
Haagan-Dazs is taking Colony Collapse Disorder so seriously that they've partnered with Penn State to further research to help save our little friends.<br />
<br />
Burt's Bees has been taking Colony Collapse Disorder seriously since 2007. Only a year after beekeepers began reporting 30-90% losses of their hives to the USDA. Burt's Bees feels that if this disorder goes untreated it could effect the availability of the food we eat. They partnered up with the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign and began funding research for the Honeybee Health Improvement Project. In June 2008 Burt's Bees went to US Congress to request funding and raise awareness.<br />
<br />
All of these companies continue to raise awareness using very creative measures. By supporting these companies and their campaigns like Whole Foods cantelpopes or Burt's Bees lip balm you'll be helping the honeybees and getting things you already need.<br />

What we learned was she shares something in common with fifth generation beekeeper, Judy Endicott Manzone. “My father kept bees as a hobby for many years while I was growing up,” Cathy said. “There was always more than enough honey to go around, and my mother was a genius at finding creative ways to use honey as a primary sweetener in her recipes.”</span></div><div style="color: #1a1a1a; font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 6.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">In terms of her own cooking, Cathy added, “while we had plenty of honey-themed baked goods, it was exciting to develop a honey-based recipe that complimented a healthy green salad! She’s also happy to share it with all our Facebook friends.</span></div><div><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><br />

We live here in Falmouth, Maine with our two cats, Stella and Arwen who are great favorites with us. I am an enthusiast – rather than a perfectionist. I like to try new things, new hobbies, new recipes. I am a writer, and a writing teacher. I like to say that I am a full-time creative person with a variety of part-time jobs….one of which is cooking for my family. A few years ago, to liven that up, I began entering cooking contests. I made this recipe up a while ago when I was experimenting with simple ideas that tasted great. Puff pastry adds an elegant simplicity to the proceedings. And I believe in working with a few high quality ingredients that all have their own textures…here you have sweet, tart, crunchy, creamy…and the visual effect of drizzled honey is so beautiful. I am not surprised you like it! I absolutely love to cook with honey, as it adds a unique depth of flavor and (because I am lucky enough to know some local beekeepers) because it is truly a local ingredient. It pleases me! For those watching calories (and who isn't) a nice substitution can be some Greek yoghurt for that mascarpone. Different of course, but still nice.”</span></div><div style="color: #1a1a1a; font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 6.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><br />

I love the layers of flavor in this recipe. In one bite you can taste the tartness of the raspberries, the sweetness of the honey and the creaminess of the mascarpone. Then there is that crunch from the crust with a hint of sweet and savory flavor from the ground cardamom."</span></div><div style="font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 6.0px 0.0px; min-height: 13.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span></div><div style="font: 11.0px Verdana; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 6.0px 0.0px;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px color: #1a1a1a;">Judy thinks the recipe is very versatile. “This</span><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"> little treat may be served as an afternoon tea pastry or a light dessert.”</span></div><div><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><br />
